I’m with ERIE
Four-time Super Bowl champion
October 8, 2010
Customer with Anderson Insurance Agency in Bakerstown, Pa.
Hometown: originally, Appleton, Wis. (Now, Pittsburgh, Pa.)
Where you've heard his name : As a running back at Notre Dame circa 1968 and as a four-time Super Bowl champion with the Pittsburgh Steelers. In his 11-year NFL career, Bleier amassed more than 5,000 total yards and scored 25 touchdowns.
Two drafts, worlds apart: In the beginning, just months after being drafted by the Steelers, the 22-year-old Bleier was drafted again — this time by the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. “My world turned upside down,” he says. During the war, Bleier was seriously wounded, and he thought he’d never play football again. He was later awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
Perseverance pays off: Defying the odds, Bleier returned to the NFL in 1971. In 1974, he earned a starting spot in the backfield alongside NFL Hall of Famer Franco Harris. “I was playing primarily special teams until injuries mounted; then I was inserted as a fullback,” he recalls. Bleier kept playing, and the team kept winning, eventually defeating the Minnesota Vikings to win the franchise’s first Super Bowl.
What he does now: Motivational speaking. Pulling from his life story, Bleier talks about becoming the best you can be. “We can choose to be less than we are capable of being or more,” says Bleier. “We all have turning points in our lives. We can either use them or reject them.”
Bleier also serves as managing member of RBVetCo LLC, a service-disabled veteran-owned small business he started in 2004. RBVetCo LLC, a general contractor, performs work from North Dakota to Florida and everywhere in between.
Flight 93 Memorial: When the Steelers were scheduled to open the 2009 season on Thursday, Sept. 10, Bleier was part of a group that planned the “9/11 We Will Never Forget” Dinner at Heinz Field. The event—a benefit for the Flight 93 National Memorial Campaign to build a National Park in memory of the plane that went down in Somerset, Pa., on Sept. 11, 2001—was so successful, he says they hosted the dinner again in 2010.Why he’s with ERIE: Bleier has been insured with ERIE through the Anderson Insurance Agency in Bakerstown, Pa. for well over a decade, and his wife has been a Customer even longer. “We stay because of reliability,” Bleier says. “You don’t think of auto insurance until you need it. Those instances I’ve had have been taken care of seamlessly.”
