Where you’ve heard her name: Nikki Giovanni is one of the most widely-read contemporary American poets. She has long attracted attention as a champion of truth, experience and human rights through her poetry, activism and writing. Over the past 27 years, she’s received numerous honors, including being named Woman of the Year by Mademoiselle magazine, The Ladies Home Journal and Ebony magazine. Most recently, she was the recipient of the 2007 Carl Sandburg Literary Award, which pays tribute to a writer whose work has helped enhance the public’s awareness of the written word.

Where else: In 2006, she was one of the African American women honored in Oprah Winfrey’s “25 Living Legends.”

Her words, her work: “We are better than we think, not quite what we want to be. We are alive to the imagination and the possibility we will continue to invent the future through our blood and tears, through all this sadness.” —from a memorial speech Giovanni gave following the April 2007 tragic shooting at Virginia Tech.

Why Erie Insurance? “ERIE has been able to handle all my services with a personal, small-town touch. I have a great insurance agent in Danny Carper. Dan has always looked out for me and my late mother, and he makes it so that I don’t have to worry.”
