Mario PinoHometown: Ellicott City, Md.

Occupation: American Thoroughbred horse racing jockey

On the elite list: Only 15 jockeys have been fortunate enough to crack the 6,000 win mark and Mario is one of them. He reached the landmark at Laurel Park in Laurel, Md., riding a horse named Pass Play. He now ranks 14th on the list of all-time North American winners and is Maryland’s all-time winningest jockey.

His moment in the spotlight: Mario raced to a second place finish in the 2007 Kentucky Derby—his first appearance at the Derby. The jockey and horse, Hard Spun, crossed the finish line just behind Street Sense to clinch the runner-up position.

Insider view: “Racing at the Kentucky Derby is just unbelievable. To go and run in that atmosphere is like playing in the World Series or Super Bowl. It’s the biggest accomplishment of my career.”

Other big wins: In 2007, Mario also won the King’s Bishop Stakes and Kentucky Cup Classic Stakes with Hard Spun.

Horse sense: “Horses like Hard Spun only come along once in a while and I just feel lucky that I was able to ride him.”

Why ERIE? Mario’s wife, Christina, says that being insured by ERIE is like a family tradition. “My parents had Erie Insurance and now we have all our insurance with ERIE and the H.T. Brown Insurance Agency in Laurel, Md. And as our kids started to drive, we’ve had them insured as well. We’ve been with ERIE for more than 20 years and have always been happy with the service we receive
