1998 Car Guide

Our Criteria
The criteria used for selecting the "Top 100" includes:
  1. Statistics from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), including personal injury loss, driver death rate, collision loss and crashworthiness evaluations.
  2. Overall crashworthiness evaluation of good, acceptable or marginal based on recent crash test data from the IIHS (Note: Not all vehicles on the list were tested by the IIHS).
  3. A minimum front-driver and passenger air bags. Some models are now equipped with side-impact air bags.
  4. Four-wheel antilock brakes are either standard equipment or an extra-cost option.
  5. No rating increase has been assigned based on ERIE's Car Experience rating (CER) program. This program rates vehicles based on their overall physical damage loss experience.
  6. No performance car surcharge applies.
Discounts for safety features

Erie Insurance continues to recognize the safety benefits of antilock brakes when used correctly. In fact, we offer a 10% discount on some coverages if the vehicle is equipped with antilock brakes on all four wheels.
