2000 Car Guide

Our Criteria
The criteria used for selecting the models in our Car Guide include:
  1. Personal injury loss statistics that are average, better-than-average, or substantially better-than-average based on insurance company loss experience from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
  2. Driver Death Rate statistics that are average, better-than-average, or substantially better-than-average based on information from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
  3. Collision loss statistics that are average, better-than-average, or substantially better-than-average based on insurance company loss experience from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
  4. Overall Crashworthiness Evaluation of Good, Acceptable, or Marginal based on recent Crash Test Data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Recent data includes model years 1996 through 1998. Vehicles which earned an overall evaluation of "Poor" failed to meet this criteria.
  5. A minimum of dual front driver and passenger air bags. Some models are now equipped with side-impact air bags.
  6. Four-Wheel Antilock Brakes are either standard equipment, or available as an extra-cost option.
  7. No rating increase has been assigned based on ERIE's Car Experience Rating (ERC) program. This program rates vehicles based on their overall physical damage loss experience.
  8. No performance car surcharges apply.
Discounts for safety features

Erie Insurance continues to recognize the safety benefits of antilock brakes when used correctly. In fact, we offer a 10% discount on some coverages if the vehicle is equipped with antilock brakes on all four wheels.

See Below references apply to new or substantially restyled models that have not yet achieved actual on-road loss experience. They have been included conditionally at this time, but are subject to further evaluations in the future.

Information provided here is based on safety and insurance value projections and it is not an endorsement of any particular make or model. Approximate 2000 price ranges supplied by the manufacturers are shown in parentheses. Some models (and their pricing) will not be introduced until later in the model year.
