Resources for Parents of Teen Drivers
Tips for Parents
Educate yourself. Much has changed since you got your driver’s license. Laws for young drivers continue to evolve as more states strengthen their Graduated Driver’s Licensing systems. Learn your state’s young driver laws and refer to our list of state links to find licensing information for where you live.
Set a good example. Who does your son or daughter watch drive the most? You. Practice safe driving and lead by example.
Practice, practice, practice. Driving consists of a variety of new skills for your teenager to learn. Practicing and honing those skills is a must. Take time exposing new drivers to various driving situations and conditions as they become more experienced behind the wheel. Be patient as they learn and take things slow.
Set your own guidelines. Don’t be afraid to put additional restrictions on your young drivers — even in excess of what the law states. Restrict cell phone use, number of passengers and nighttime driving for new drivers, and gradually allow them more privileges as they prove ready.
Continue to monitor progress. Be sure to ride with your teenager occasionally to monitor his or her progress even after full license privileges are attained. Revoke driving privileges if necessary.
Focus on five factors:
- Insist on seatbelts
- Eliminate distractions
- Limit teen passengers
- Obey the speed limit
- Prohibit impaired driving
