Oct. 18, 2007 - Erie Insurance Employees joined the cause to help find a cure for juvenile diabetes by participating in The Walk to Cure Diabetes last month at Presque Isle State Park in Erie, Pa.

The volunteers and walkers, led by Tim NeCastro, senior vice president and division officer, Controller Division, raised nearly $29,000 in pledges. NeCastro serves as Erie Insurance’s corporate Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) team champion.

“I want to thank everyone who contributed, as well as the many walkers who participated in the 3-mile walk,” said NeCastro. “The Erie Insurance family is always there for others in need, and it was a great honor to share in this event with all of you.”

Proceeds from the annual event support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s mission to find a cure for juvenile diabetes and its complications through the support of research.

In addition to the Sept. 23 walk, Erie-based Employees gathered in the home office Perry Square special events room and at Knowledge Park for a food day and bake sale on Sept. 19.

Renae Stoddard, senior inside claims representative, Claims Services and Support, has been involved in Erie Insurance’s JDRF fundraising efforts for three years.

“As you come to work with organizations like JDRF, you start to realize how your efforts in defeating a disease affect Erie Insurance family members all around you,” said Stoddard. “It’s a great feeling to know you’re making a difference in their lives.”

Stoddard was also the mastermind behind the JDRF bake sale. “I thought we had a great response to the food day and bake sale this year,” she said, “not only in what the Employees bought, but also in what they donated.”
