Jan. 16, 2012 - Roughly half of all Americans make New Year’s resolutions and commit to improving their lifestyles or reaching long-term goals.
This year, make a resolution that’s easy to keep – and can save lives and protect your property. You can take simple steps to prepare your family, home, business and community in the face of potential disaster.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) kicked off its annual Resolve to be Ready 2012 campaign, which urges Americans to make their New Year’s resolution to be prepared for disasters.
Free preparedness resources, such as a Family Emergency Plan template and an Emergency Supply Kit Checklist are available on the Web site. It also has a section for kids ages 8-12 and for owner-operators of small- to medium-sized businesses.
“Emergencies will happen, but taking action now can help us all to minimize the impact they have on our lives,” says vice president of Crisis Prevention and Management Jim Vrooman. “Preparedness is contagious. What starts with one family can spread throughout a neighborhood, and every prepared community frees up emergency responders to take care of those who are in dire need.”
The National Climatic Data Center noted that in 2011 the U.S. encountered more billion-dollar natural disasters than any year on record. The U.S. experienced its first hurricane landfall since 2008, the most deadly series of tornadoes since the 1950s, significant earthquakes and severe flooding – hazards that impacted every region of the country. All of these events have served as important reminders that disasters can strike anytime, anywhere.
“Being prepared, “ Jim says, “is one of the most effective things you can do to protect your home and loved ones.”
If you have questions about how your ERIE homeowners coverage responds if damage occurs, contact your local ERIE Agent. It always best to review all your insurance coverage with your Agent at least once a year.
