In the flurry of Black Friday ads promoting sales at national chain stores, it’s easy to forget about your local small business community.
And that’s too bad since small business gives a big boost to the economy. The Small Business Administration reports that small businesses accounted for 64 percent of new jobs created between 1993 and 2011. Shopping at a small business also pumps two to three times more money into a local economy than shopping at a chain store. (It’s especially beneficial to shop local when it comes to these seven types of business.)
A great time to show your support for small business is on Small Business Saturday®. Shoppers on this day are encouraged to support the local small business owners in their community by “shopping small the Saturday after Thanksgiving.”
This season, remember the folks who run the Main Street businesses in your town or city. Stop into a local gift store, grab lunch at a corner diner or buy a wreath from that third-generation flower shop.
