The sun rose brightly over Elmira, N.Y. the morning of Oct. 8 as employees and agents representing ERIE’s New York branch office and several local agencies packed and delivered food for Meals on Wheels of Chemung County. At the heart of their efforts was both a sense of community and service.
“Meals on Wheels supports the health and well being of their neighbors with compassion and exceptional service. It mirrors ERIE’s philosophy of ‘Above All in Service’,” said District Sales Manager Mark Schafer, who worked with ERIE agent Peter Wallin of the Wallin Insurance Agency to organize the event. “We’re actively involved in and committed to the communities we do business in. Our employees live in these towns, and our agents are local small business owners.”
Wallin is on the board of the local Meals on Wheels. At his urging, agents from W.J. Farmer Agency and Piper Insurance Agency – along with ERIE’s sales, claims and corporate groups – packaged meals for senior citizens. The team then formed a caravan of ERIE-branded-wrapped cars to hit the streets of Elmira and deliver the food.
“Thanks to Meals on Wheels, senior citizens can stay in their homes, and we know they’re getting healthy, balanced meals,” said Wallin. “We got to take off our insurance hats and put on our volunteer hats for the day to support our local community.”
