The sounds of hammers, buzz saws and power drills filled four homes in Richmond and Roanoke, Virginia recently, as Employee, Agent and Customer volunteers from Erie Insurance teamed up with the Rebuilding Together organization to make home repairs, safety modifications and energy efficient upgrades for local homeowners.

Rebuilding Together is a nonprofit organization that rehabs homes for low-income homeowners across the country. Upgrades included weatherizing doors and windows, installing handrails, improving lighting, making minor electrical and plumbing repairs, and securing exterior doors.

Three homes total – two in Richmond and one in Roanoke – were renovated. To mark Veterans Day in Roanoke, ERIE upgraded the home of a veteran’s widow. In the spring, the team will work on another home of a local vet.

“Rebuilding Together works year round to raise awareness of the plight of America’s low-income homeowners and communities that struggle to stabilize and preserve their homes and neighborhoods,” said Amy King, executive director of Rebuilding Together of Richmond. “With the generous support from sponsors like Erie Insurance, we have been able to make significant improvements in the homes and lives of local residents for the past 21 years.”

In Richmond, Agents Doug Cox of Cornerstone Insurance, Ken Forti of Kenneth Forti Insurance, Rob Heare of Thurston and Heare Insurance, Gene Lastfogel of Virginia Insurance Services, Kevin Perry of Dyeco Insurance Group and Todd Sumser of James River Insurance joined ERIE employees for the day.

In Roanoke, ERIE Customer Ryan Richards of Richards Landscaping, joined local employees for the build.

Shirley Roop, whose home was renovated in Roanoke, said jokingly of the renovations, “I just know the water bill is going to go up because every time I walk by the faucet, I want to turn it on.”
