Back to School: 300+ Employees Volunteer at Pfeiffer-Burleigh

It’s no secret that time takes its toll on school buildings. It can be difficult for a child to learn in an environment where the shelves are filled with outdated books, or the painting on the wall starts to peel.

That’s why Erie Insurance has been the Adopt-A-School Partner with Pfeiffer-Burleigh Elementary, a local K-5 public school located just a few blocks from our Home Office campus in Erie, Pa., since 1987. Throughout the 31-year partnership, ERIE has collected everything from books to lunch bags in an effort to help the school flourish and the students succeed.

This year, in conjunction with ServErie’s Summer Initiative, more than 300 ERIE employees rolled up their sleeves to help remodel several areas of Pfeiffer-Burleigh. The ServErie Summer Initiative is an annual event that brings together hundreds of volunteers to clean up at different sites to restore hope to local Erie neighborhoods.

At Pfeiffer-Burleigh, the ERIE employees joined over a thousand local volunteers to scrub, paint and landscape. But it was more than just manual labor – it was a day of fun and camaraderie.

This year’s cleanup at Pfeiffer-Burleigh drew 100 more ERIE volunteers than last year’s ServErie Summer Initiative at nearby Erie High School, where 215 ERIE employees painted thousands of lockers, classrooms and stairwells, among many other tasks.

With a partnership that spans more than three decades, it’s no surprise that ERIE employees would turn out in force to help the Pfeiffer-Burleigh community.

I think others saw the energy and fun at Erie High last year and it was contagious,” said Lisa Holman, director of customer service and project lead for the ServErie Summer Initiative. “But since Pfeiffer-Burleigh is our community school, that encouraged even more people to get involved.”

ERIE has also made a strong commitment to literacy at Pfeiffer-Burleigh, donating thousands of dollars to completely remodel the school’s library from the carpet to the bookshelves.

Other ERIE employees on the ServErie project team include Sue Fassette, Nate Adams, Erin Siegrist and Jeff Irwin.

Through ERIE Service Corps, a companywide initiative, teams of employees have the opportunity to volunteer during the workweek. ERIE offers employees 7.5 hours of paid time annually to participate in company-sponsored team events for non-profit organizations that focus on education, health and human services, civic and community, arts and culture, and safety and disaster relief. ERIE volunteers spend thousands of hours helping communities each year.

Whether it’s community service, customer service or claims service, doing the right thing is what we’re all about. Learn more about our culture of service or see what we’ve been up to with the ERIE Giving Network.
