Number of years with ERIE: 8
Hometown: Greendale, Wis.
The 9 to 5 (or 8 to 4:30): I try to invest most of my time in the field conducting field re-inspections and ride-alongs, and I will occasionally handle field losses. I also review the vehicle damages and the estimates for accuracy for the re-inspections for ERIE’s Direct Repair Program (DRP) shops.
What do you like best about working at ERIE? I have been in the insurance industry for a long time and ERIE continues to stand by its founding principles for both the policyholder and for Employees. I love working in the field working with the automotive industry. I am a supervisor, but still have the opportunity to get my hands dirty. I like handling field claims and being in the field reinspecting vehicles.
Favorite childhood toy: G.I. Joe.
Outside interests: Hunting, fishing, camping and running. I teach hunter’s education, and I used to coach high school wrestling.
Time When I was Above All in Servie: A couple of years ago, there was a large hailstorm in northwestern Wisconsin and several other CATs (catastrophes) occurring throughout ERIE’s footprint, causing staffing availability issues at the branch office. Rather than tap already depleted resources, myself and another material damage adjuster handled three wholesale dealer losses from beginning to end. We set up an operating space at a local Agent’s office allowing us to handle the claims quickly and efficiently. I respect folks that lead by example rather than direction, and I am sure the staff, policyholders and agents appreciated our efforts.
What prepared me the most for my current position: Working in the field for many years with another carrier, learning to be self-reliant and managing a body shop.
Greatest achievement: Associate in Claims (AIC) designation.
Advice you’d offer to a new Employee: Don’t be afraid to ask questions or to fail, but learn from these lessons.
Education: University of Wisconsin–Whitewater. (The Warhawks are a four-time National Champion in Division 3 Football. This season they went 15-0.)
If not insurance, then … I would own a body shop or work for Sig Hansen on the fishing vessel Northwestern. Hansen is featured on the documentary TV series Deadliest Catch.
