Windshield and Auto Glass Claims Process (Glass-Only Claims)
If just your vehicle’s windshield or window glass is damaged, it’s best to get it repaired as soon as possible. Driving around with a nicked or cracked windshield is dangerous, but the good news is that getting it repaired is a snap.
To get started on your auto glass claim, contact a local glass repair business or pick one that is a part of ERIEGlassSM, a nationwide network of more than 8,000 auto repair and glass replacement shops, which Erie Insurance offers through a partnership with Safelite® Solutions.
The other good news is that a chip or crack doesn’t necessarily mean you need to replace the windshield. (Or that you have to pay an insurance deductible—keep reading to Step 3 to learn more about that.)
Certified repair specialists can usually repair windshield chips, nicks and cracks as long as the length of a dollar bill. However, the longer you leave a windshield chip, the more likely it will get worse. Weather changes or simply driving over a pothole can put additional pressure on the edges of a chip, which can lead quickly to a crack. So don’t wait to get your windshield repaired. You could really regret it, and it could cost you more time and money.
Here’s more information to help you to start your claim.
Step 1: Start your claim
To start an auto glass claim through the ERIEGlassSM program, call (800) 552-3743, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. To get started right away, file your claim online by selecting Start a Glass Claim or through our Erie Insurance Mobile App.
If you have other damage to your car, contact your agent or call ERIE at (800) 367-3743.
Step 2: Schedule the repair
ERIE customers always have a choice when it comes to deciding who they want to repair the damage. You can pick the glass repair shop or work with ERIE’s partner Safelite® Solutions.
Safelite® Solutions will process the paperwork and even schedule an appointment with a local glass shop. You can choose between in-shop or mobile options. What makes the mobile option so convenient is that you can arrange to have the repair done in your driveway, at your workplace parking lot or another location.
A windshield repair takes about 30 minutes or less, and the vehicle is safe to drive immediately. With a windshield replacement, the timing can vary depending on weather conditions and the type of materials used. Your technician will let you know the safe time to start driving again.
Step 3: Check your coverage
If a damaged windshield can be repaired rather than replaced, you won’t have to pay your comprehensive deductible (that’s the amount you pay before insurance kicks in). If a windshield replacement is needed, the deductible will apply.
If you have any question about the claims process or your insurance coverage, please contact your local Erie agent.
