“In this changing world, the age of an institution is something to boast of. Great age is in itself evidence of certain virtues. For an institution to live long, it must … serve some useful purpose.”
Erie Insurance Co-Founder H.O. Hirt wrote those words in 1930, just five years after opening the company’s doors. Even early on, he clearly had a vision for how to build a company that could withstand the test of time. Ninety-five years later, as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of Erie Insurance, I can say with pride that H.O.’s vision has become a reality. And I can say with confidence that, just as he predicted, our unwavering commitment to certain virtues is the secret to that enduring success.
Practice the Golden Rule.
Never lose the human touch.
Be Above all in sERvIcE®.
These and many other principles have guided ERIE Employees and Agents for decades, and they continue to guide how we act today.
Others in our industry have moved away from personalized and compassionate service in favor of speed and convenience. We’ve taken a different approach. We’ve added the speed and convenience of self-service through digital capabilities like Online Account. But we’ve kept the empathetic and knowledgeable support only humans can provide at the center.
As for that “useful purpose” H.O. mentioned? Providing protection, peace of mind and exceptional service to millions of Policyholders for a full century is one of the most useful purposes I can imagine.
And while I don’t like to boast, I’m convinced we do it better than anyone in the industry.
After all, for a company to endure and grow as much as ERIE has, we must be doing many things right. Whether you’ve been with ERIE for decades or just a short time, we’re grateful for the opportunity to be there for you—then, now and always.
Best,
Tim NeCastro,
President & CEO
