Tournament raises more than $1.5 million since 2010 for Erie-area nonprofits

Twenty-six Erie-area nonprofits received a total of $130,000 in donations today from the 12th annual Erie Insurance Charity Challenge golf tournament. Area businesses participating in the tournament donated the prize money to a charitable organization of their choice.

Since its start in 2010, Charity Challenge has contributed more than $1.5 million to local nonprofits. This level of giving is possible because Erie Insurance underwrites the cost of the tournament, and every dollar of the entry fees and hole sponsorships goes directly to charities.

This year, each nonprofit organization received a $5,000 donation.

“Erie is our hometown, and we take our responsibility to give where we live to heart,” said ERIE Insurance president and CEO Tim NeCastro. “We’re thankful to the local businesses that participate in the Charity Challenge and, in turn, help us build a stronger community by supporting area nonprofits and the critical work they do.”

The charities benefiting from funds this year included: ACE Mentor Program of Western Pennsylvania, Africa 6000, Alzheimer's Association-Greater PA Chapter, American Red Cross-Northwest PA Chapter, Eagle’s Nest Leadership Corporation, Emma’s Footprints, Emmaus Ministries, Inc., Erie Homes for Children and Adults, Erie Humane Society, ExpERIEnce Children's Museum, Harborcreek Youth Services, Impact Corry (Corry Community Development Corporation), James R. Herdzik Memorial Scholarship, John F. Kennedy Center, Junior Achievement of Western PA, Lindsay Graygo Memorial Scholarship, Lucy's First Steps, Meals On Wheels, Mercy Center for Women, Saint Martin Center, Saint Mary's Home of Erie, Salvation Army, Second Harvest Food Bank, Success through Sport, Therapy Dogs United and YMCA of Greater Erie.
